The musical Hamilton originally debuted on Broadway in 2015 and has since become a pop culture phenomenon that has spread across the world. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, Broadway has temporarily closed and all tours for Hamilton have been rescheduled. In response to this, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the lyricist and creator of Hamilton partnered with Disney to release a recorded version of their show on to Disney+. Hamilton tells the story of the forgotten Founding Father of the United States, Alexander Hamilton, but instead of using conventional storytelling means this musical is told through a hip hop beat. Most of the characters in this film are played by people of colour to fit the style of rap and provide a new experience compared to what you learned in history class. The plot of Hamilton is based on him being an immigrant and overcoming many barriers along the way. It was the perfect opportunity to cast many non-white actors to show a relevant story showcasing the current views of immigrants in the US and the feeling of comradery as well as belonging. Through brilliant lighting, sound effects and music Hamilton takes you on an experience through every important part of the American Revolution; the election of the first president, George Washington, to the signing of the Declaration of Independence and finally the death of Hamilton and his son via gun violence. The performance starts out with an astounding musical number detailing how Hamilton is an immigrant to the US and how he came to live in the US. Hamilton then meets the soon to be Founding Fathers to begin the American Revolution. Both acts contain beautiful pieces that you can listen to prior to watching the show on your favourite music streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music. Every single light and sound in that auditorium is created perfectly so the viewer can feel as if they are in the presence of the actors at every moment. Once Broadway is open again I can finally see Hamilton live in a theatre to have a more pure viewing of one of the most beautifully crafted musicals this century.
